Coming on May 10, Illustrated Children’s Ministry will be offering a new, 12-week curriculum called An Illustrated Invitation: Joining God at Work in the World. Following the success of our Illustrated Earth and Illustrated Compassion curricula, we are pleased to provide you with another no-prep curriculum geared toward children from preschool to fifth grade. Our team of illustrators and writers are working on this unique curriculum right now, and we will keep you updated here, as well as on social media.
Structure of Curriculum
This curriculum focuses on a particular biblical story for each lesson. Our goal is to offer you a no-prep curriculum that can easily be led by anyone in your congregation. With hopes of minimizing your workload, we have designed An Illustrated Invitation in a way that requires little background material/reading prior to presenting the lesson.
We have put together a small list of general supplies we recommend you gather and make available each week so there isn’t any prep work from week to week. What emerges is a simple but meaningful lesson focused on hearing a biblical story, reflecting on it with open-ended questions, creating meaningful art, sharing in an interactive activity based on the story, and an opportunity to share God’s love.
About the Curriculum
For those who have used our curriculum before, you will notice format similarities. Each lesson will include an opening gathering activity that involves movement, Illustrated Story Cards to help tell or retell the story, a script version of the story you can use for acting the story out, discussion questions, an activity for joining God at work, and coloring! New for this year, each Gathering Activity will include an option for younger children and an option for older children. We believe this will provide you with all you will need to run a successful program using our curriculum.
Scope & Sequence
Here are the three modules and the Bible stories covered in this curriculum.
MODULE 1: God’s Invitation in the Hebrew Scriptures: In module 1, we explore four stories from the Hebrew Scriptures about people invited and even challenged, to be a part of bringing God’s redeeming love into the world and how that invitation is for us, too.
- Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1, 5-6: God Invites Abram and Sarai
- Genesis 21:5-21: God’s Love for Hagar and Ishmael
- Genesis 28:10-19: The Place God Was In
- Numbers 27:1-11: Five Daughters Demand to be Included
MODULE 2: God’s Invitation in the New Testament: In module 2, we study four New Testament stories about how God works through us, identify how we see God at work in the world today and find ways to join in that work.
- Luke 2:41-52: God’s Wisdom is with Young Jesus
- Luke 19:1-10: Jesus Surprises Zacchaeus
- Matthew 22:34-40: Love God, Love Your Neighbor
- Acts 16:13-15: Lydia Extends an Invitation
MODULE 3: Accepting God’s Invitation: In module 3, we learn about some of the ways God demonstrates how to be a blessing, both in the Hebrew scriptures and in the New Testament, and explore ways we can accept God’s invitation to help all people be blessed and flourish.
- Deuteronomy 6:4-9; 24-25: Everywhere You Go
- Leviticus 25:8-10: Jubilee
- Acts 2:1-12; 37-47: The Gift of the Holy Spirit
- 1 Corinthians 11:23-26: Remember Me
Illustrated Invitation Coloring Posters & Coloring Pages
We will also be offering a set of four large coloring posters: one large 4′ x 3′ poster that will address the overall theme of invitation, and three 2′ x 3′ posters, which will include symbols and words from the four stories that are part of each module. In addition to the coloring posters, each lesson in the curriculum will also include a separate 8.5×11 coloring page of the biblical story for that lesson.
These posters are ordered separately from the curriculum and are not included in the Curriculum Bundle. Below you can see both the black and white, uncolored, illustrations, as well as examples of what they could look like colored! Here is the Invitation poster which is the 4′ x 3′ poster.
